RESUMO

Analysis of data on utrastructure of granulocytes of freshwater and marine bony fish of orders Salmoniformes, Cypriniformes, and Perciformes showed that in all studied species there were revealed two types of granulocytes - neutrophils and eosinophils. The exception was the bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix L. whose pronephros hemopoietic tissue was found to contain one type of the granulocytic line - neutrophils. The identification parameters of granular leukocytes are specific granules filling the cytoplasm. The main form of specific granules in neutrophils of bony fish of various phylogenetic groups is an elongated granule with different distribution of fibrils or a granule that has crystalloid formed from fibrils. The main form of eosinophil granules - large, electron-dense, homogenous.

Population dynamics are typically affected by a combination of density-independent and density-dependent factors, the latter of which have been conceptually and theoretically linked with how variable population sizes are over time-which in turn has been tied to how prone populations are to extinction. To address evidence for the occurrence of density dependence and its relationship with population size variability (pv), we quantified each of these for 126 populations of 8 species of Salmoniformes. Using random-effects models, we partitioned variation in the strength of density dependence and the magnitude of pv between and within species and estimated the correlation of density dependence and population size variability at both the between- and within-species levels. We found that variation in the strength of density dependence was predominately within species (I(2) = 0.12 [corrected] variation in population size variability was distributed both between and within species (I(2) = 0.40). Contrary to theoretical and conceptual expectations, the strength of density dependence and the magnitude of population size variability were positively correlated at the between species level (r = 0.90), although this estimate had 95 % credibility intervals (Bayesian analogues to confidence intervals) that overlapped zero. The within-species correlation between density dependence and population size variability was not distinguishable from zero. Given that density dependence for Salmoniformes was highly variable within species, we next determined the joint effects of intrinsic (density-dependent) and extrinsic (density-independent) factors on the population dynamics of a threatened salmonid, the Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi). We found that density-dependent and -independent factors additively contributed to population dynamics. This finding suggests that the observed within-species variability in density dependence might be attributable to local differences in the strength of density-independent factors.

Despite the progresses done in the field of teleostean phylogeny in the last decades, recent studies continué to raise questions concerning the higher-level relationships of this remarkably diverse group of fishes. The main aim of the present work is to help to clarify teleostean higher-level relationships. For that purpose, we undertook a cladistic analysis including 70 terminal taxa of 20 different orders and 271 morphological characters, concerning mainly osteological and myological structures of the cephalic region , pectoral girdle and fins and anterior vertebrae. In the consensus cladogram obtained, the elopomorphs appear as the most basal extant teleosts. The osteoglossomorphs included in the analysis are grouped in a monophyletic clade, which is the sister-group of the remaining non-elopomorph teleosts. The Otocephala, the Clupeiformes, and the Ostariophysi appear as monophyletic clades, thus contradicting the results of some recent molecular cladistic analyses placing the Alepocephaloidea inside the Otocephala. In fact, the monophyly of the Argentiniformes (Alepocephaloidea + Argentinoidea) is well supported by the cladistic analysis of the present work. This cladistic analysis also provides support for the monophyly of the Alepocephaloidea, of the Argentinoidea, of the Galaxioidea + Osmeroidea, and of the Esociforines. However, it does notprovide strong evidence to resolve the relationships between the Argentiniformes, Salmoniformes, Esociformes, Osmeriformes and Neoteleostei, although it does indicate that the salmoniforms might be closely related to the Neoteleostei and that the Esociformes and the Osmeriformes might constitute a monophyletic unit. The monophyly of the Cypriniformes + Characiformes + Gymnotiformes + Siluriformes, of the Characiformes + Gymnotiformes + Siluriformes and of the Gymnotiformes + Siluriformes is well supported.


A pesar de los avances realizados en relacion a la filogenia de los teleosteos en las últimas décadas, los estudios recientes siguen planteando cuestiones relativas a los altos niveles de relacion de este notable grupo de diversos peces. El principal objetivo del presente trabajo es contribuir a aclarar los altos niveles de relacion de teleosteos. Con este propósito, se llevó a cabo un análisis cladístico entre 70 taxones terminales de 20 órdenes diferentes y 271 caracteres morfológicos, principalmente en relacion con estructuras osteológicas y miológicas de la region cefálica, cintura escapular y las aletas anteriores y vértebras. En el cladograma de consenso obtenido, los elopomorfos aparecen como los teleosteos más básicos existentes. Los osteoglosomorfos incluidos en el análisis se agrupan en un ciado monofilético, que es el grupo hermano de los restantes teleosteos no elopomorfos. Los Otocephala, los clupeiforines, y los ostariofisios aparecen como ciados monofiléticos, contradiciendo así los resultados de algunos análisis moleculares cladísticos recientes incluyendo los Alepocephalidae dentro Otocephala. De hecho, la monofilia de los Argentiniformes (Alepocephaloidea + Argentinoidea) está bien apoyada por el análisis cladístico del presente trabajo. Este análisis cladístico también proporciona apoyo para la monofilia de los Alepocephaloidea, de los Argentinoidea, de los Galaxioidea + Osmeroidea, y de los Esociformes. Sin embargo, no proporciona pruebas sólidas para resolver las relaciones entre los Argentiniformes, Salmoniformes, Esociformes, Osmeriformes y Neoteleostei, aunque indica que los salmoniformes podrían estar estrechamente relacionados con los Neoteleostei, y que los Esociformes y los Osmeriformes podrían constituir una unidad monofilética. Sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, obtained from 18 rivers in Shizuoka Prefecture were examined for metacercarial infection of 2 flukes, Metagonimus yokogawai and Metagonimus miyatai. The infection rate and density of metacercariae in the fish were higher in eastern and western regions than in central region of the prefecture. After infection of hamsters with metacercariae derived from the scale, 98.7% of the adult worms obtained from the intestine was found to be M. miyatai. Conversely, from infection with metacercariae from the flesh, 90.0% of the worms was M. yokogawai. Since the worms had no exclusivity in the tissues, we conclude that the flukes have location preference with the former primarily preferring the scale, and the latter the flesh. Fish from two rivers located in adjacent areas in the western region had relatively a higher ratio of M. yokogawai in the scale relative to other rivers, suggesting an intraspecific genetic variation due to geographical isolation. On examination of adult worms in the hamster's intestine, M. yokogawai was mainly located towards the anterior part of the intestine, unlike M. miyatai, suggesting that in mammalian host too, the parasites have site preference.

Bacterial cold water disease in the ayu Plecoglossus altivelis caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a serious problem in the Japanese freshwater culture industry. The distribution and activity of this bacterium on the body surface of the ayu in the infection process was investigated. The survival of F. psychrophilum in tap water showed that this bacterium might sustain its infectivity for 24 h. In an experimental infection, juvenile ayu were immersed in water containing 10(8.9) CFU/ml F. psychrophilum, and the progressing infection was followed by scanning electron microscopy during a 24-h period. This bacterium was observed in the ayu for 24 h adhering to the lower jaw and caudal peduncle, where the epidermis tissue was collapsed. This study showed that bacterial suspension in water sustains the activity of this bacterium. F. psychrophilum attaches especially to the jaw and caudal peduncle, growing at these sites, collapsing the dermal structure and invading the tissues.

We previously reported the chronological appearance of adenohypophysial cells in freshwater teleosts using an immunocytochemical technique. The present study investigated the chronological appearance of adenohypophysial cells in the ayu, which is spawned and has its early development in brackish water, and the results were compared with those obtained in freshwater and seawater teleosts, as well as in other vertebrates. In the adult teleostean adenohypophysis, seven or eight types of secretory cells have been distinguished, each of which produce different hormones: prolactin (PRL), growth hormone (GH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), gonadotropic hormones (GTH I and GTH II), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), melanophore stimulating hormone (MSH) and somatolactin (SL). In the pituitary of adult ayu, seven distinct types of glandular cells (PRL, GH, TSH, GTH, ACTH, MSH and SL cells) were identified. Chronologically, a few immunoreactive (ir)-PRL and ir-GH cells appeared in the ventral side of the pituitary one day before hatching. Then, just after hatching, ir-GTH cells were observed in the central to dorsal portion; ir-ACTH cells were found distributed in the anterior portion and some ir-MSH and a few ir-SL cells were seen in the posterior portion of the pituitary. Finally, a small number of ir-TSH cells were identified 50 days after hatching. These results differed from those obtained in other fishes previously reported with regard to the times of appearance of the PRL and GH cells. PRL cells appeared first, followed by GH cells in the freshwater teleosts, PRL and GH cells appeared at the same time in the brackishwater teleosts, while GH cells appeared first and PRL cells appeared last in the seawater teleosts. These results reflect the fact that PRL plays a major role in osmoregulation among freshwater teleosts, as compared with GH, which plays a similar role in seawater teleosts. It seems that both PRL and GH may play important roles in osmoregulation in brackishwater fish.
